Where Q235B actually has the edge is toughness documentation: class B guarantees 27 J Charpy energy at +20 °C as standard, while A36 ships with no mandatory impact requirement unless the buyer adds one. For grating exposed to handling impacts and vibration, the guaranteed impact value is a genuine quality signal.


Standards And Dimension Systems

The bigger practical difference is not the steel — it is the product and dimension standards attached to each market:

  • Q235B grating is produced to YB/T 4001.1 in metric sizes: bearing bars 25×3 to 75×6 mm, pitches of 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 mm, panel sizes in meters, marked like G325/30/100. Galvanizing follows GB/T 13912 / ISO 1461.

A US-specification project therefore usually cares less about the steel grade than about getting imperial bar spacing and imperial panel sizes. Chinese factories — including GNEE — produce MBG-style gratings on request; the material is then either A36 or Q235B, whichever the buyer's specification calls for.


Can Q235B Grating Substitute A36 Grating?

For general industrial flooring, walkways, platforms and trench covers: yes. The two grades are universally treated as practical equivalents (together with S235JR and SS400), and Q235B panels have been exported to US-standard projects for decades. Three things to check before substituting:

  1. Contract wording. If the purchase order literally requires "ASTM A36 with MTC", ask the factory to supply A36-branded material — most mills offer it — or provide a comparability statement with the Q235B certificate.
  2. Load table basis. Ask which grade the published load capacities were calculated on; a 235 MPa-based table used for A36 sections is conservative, not unsafe.
  3. Dimension system. For US projects, order MBG-style imperial sizes regardless of grade, so panels match the supporting steel and clips.
